Floor Traps: PVC vs Stainless Steel – A UAE Guide

A floor trap is a small fitting with an important job: it collects water at a floor point and holds a water seal so drain smells cannot come back up into the building. In the UAE the choice usually comes down to PVC or stainless steel. Here is how they compare and where each one fits.

What a floor trap does

Water from the floor runs into the trap, passes through a water-filled bend or seal, and on into the drainage line. As long as the seal holds water, sewer gases and odours stay below the floor.

PVC vs stainless steel

PVC Stainless steel 304/316
Material Plastic, corrosion-free SS 304 or SS 316, corrosion-resistant
Durability Good when protected Very robust, takes traffic and heat
Look Functional, usually concealed Clean, hygienic finish
Cost Lower Higher
Best for Concealed points, yards, gully traps Exposed, hygienic and high-traffic areas

Odour control in UAE heat

In hot weather the water seal in a rarely used trap can evaporate, and the smell comes straight back. Choose deep-seal traps for guest bathrooms, plant rooms and villas that stay empty, and top them up with water during routine maintenance.

Where each one goes

Area Recommended
Bathrooms and wet areas Stainless steel floor drain with trap
Commercial kitchens Stainless steel 316 with basket
Plant rooms Stainless steel gullies and floor traps
Car parks and basements PVC gully traps and sand traps – see basement drainage
Yards and building perimeters PVC gully traps

Frequently asked questions

Can a PVC floor trap be used outdoors?

Yes, when it is installed below ground or protected from direct sun. Exposed outdoor points are better in stainless steel.

Why does my floor trap smell?

Usually the water seal has dried out. Pour water into the drain, and consider a deep-seal trap for rooms that are used rarely.

Can you make floor traps to size?

Yes. PVC gully traps and stainless steel floor traps can be made to your size and outlet position.
