Why drainage vents need a cap

Every drainage system needs vent pipes, so air can enter and leave as water flows. Without them, traps get sucked dry and smells come into the building. An open vent pipe on a roof, though, collects rain, sand, leaves and even birds' nests. A vent cap or cowl keeps these out while letting air through.

Choosing a vent cap

Material: PVC for most building vents; cast iron or stainless steel where the cap is exposed to damage or must look neat.
Mesh or open: a mesh keeps birds and debris out. In very dusty areas, choose a cap that is easy to remove and clean.
Coastal sites: stainless steel 316, or PVC.
