Water out, soil and roots in

A planter drain sits at the bottom of a planter or podium bed. Its stainless steel mesh dome stops soil and roots from blocking the outlet, while water drains away freely. Alphatek supplies planter drains with a cast iron or PVC body for planters, podiums and roof gardens across Dubai and the UAE.

How a planter drain works

Water passes down through the soil and a drainage layer to the drain at the base of the planter. The stainless steel mesh dome lets water in but keeps soil and roots out of the outlet, so the planter does not waterlog.

The planter build-up, from the top

  1. Planting soil
  2. Filter fabric, which stops fine soil washing down
  3. Drainage layer (gravel or a drainage board)
  4. Planter drain with mesh dome at the low point
  5. Waterproofing on the planter base and walls

Choosing body and dome

  • Cast iron body: heavier, for podium and roof planters built into the structure. Aluminium or bronze dome.
  • PVC body: lighter, with 1.5″, 2″, 3″ and 4″ outlets, for planter boxes and balcony planters. Aluminium dome.

Common causes of planter leaks, and how to avoid them

  • Blocked outlets. Use a mesh dome and filter fabric.
  • Too few drains. Large planters may need more than one drain.
  • Weak waterproofing at the drain. The membrane must be properly sealed to the drain body.
