What a rainwater shoe does
Where a downpipe ends above the ground instead of connecting into an underground drain, a rainwater shoe is fitted at the bottom. It turns the water away from the building, so it does not soak the wall or wash out the paving at its base. The water then runs to a channel, a gully or a soakaway.

Rainwater shoe or direct connection?
- Rainwater shoe: the downpipe discharges at ground level, onto a channel or gully. It is easy to inspect and clear.
- Direct connection: the downpipe goes straight into an underground drain. Use a rodding eye or access fitting for cleaning.
Designing for UAE storms
UAE rain comes in short, heavy bursts. Make sure the water leaving the shoe has somewhere to go, such as a channel, a gully or an area drain. Otherwise it floods the paving next to the building. See Area Drains and Gully & Sand Traps.
