Why entrance matting matters in the UAE

Sand and dust are carried in on every shoe. Inside, they scratch marble, porcelain and wood floors, and make wet floors slippery. A recessed entrance mat at the door catches most of that grit in the first few steps, protects the expensive flooring inside, and cuts cleaning time.

How a recessed mat works

The mat sits in a shallow well in the floor, with its top flush with the floor finish. Grit and water drop through the openings into the well. The mat lifts out, so the well can be vacuumed or washed out. At external entrances, the well can drain to a floor drain or channel.

Choosing the size

• Width: the full width of the door opening, or wider.
• Depth: the longer the mat, the more grit it catches. Busy entrances should allow several full steps on the mat.
• Well depth: set in the floor build-up, so the mat sits flush.

Cleaning

Lift the mat and vacuum the well regularly. How often depends on traffic: daily in malls, weekly in residential lobbies. Wash stainless steel mats with water and mild detergent.
