What a funnel floor drain does

A funnel floor drain combines a normal floor drain with a raised funnel. Pipes from equipment, such as AC condensate lines, pump drains, boiler blow-downs and dishwasher outlets, discharge into the funnel through an air gap, while the grate around it still drains the floor. The air gap means dirty water from the drain can never be drawn back into the equipment.

Choosing the funnel

• Size: count the pipes that will discharge into it, and their sizes. Larger or more pipes need a wider funnel.
• Shape: round funnels for one or two pipes. Oval or rectangular funnels where several pipes discharge side by side.
• Height: the funnel must stay above the floor, so wash-down water does not flood it.

Why an air gap matters

If an equipment drain pipe is connected straight into a drain line, a blockage can push dirty water back into the equipment. With a funnel, the pipe ends above the funnel, so any backflow spills over the floor drain instead of entering the equipment. Many consultants and authorities require this for kitchen and medical equipment.

Keeping the trap full

In the UAE heat, traps in plant rooms can dry out, and smells then come up. Condensate lines keep funnel drains topped up in summer, but in winter, or when units are off, the trap can dry. Use a deep-seal trap, or top it up as part of maintenance. See Stainless Steel Gullies & Floor Traps.
