What is a pit drain?

A pit drain is fitted at the bottom of a pit or sump to remove water that collects there from leaks, wash-down, groundwater or condensate. It has a strong body, a grate that keeps debris out, and an outlet to the drain line or to a pump.

Where pit drains are needed

• Lift pits: water must not collect under the lift.
• Pump sumps: collecting water before it is pumped out.
• Valve and meter chambers: where leaks and rainwater collect.
• Plant room and chiller pits: for drain-down and leaks.
• Basement and car park sumps: at the lowest points. See Basement Drainage.

What we supply

Choosing a pit drain

• Outlet direction: bottom outlet into a drain below, or side outlet into a pump or pipe.
• Grate: strong enough for people, equipment and maintenance work in the pit.
• Material: cast iron for general use; stainless steel 316 for wet, chemical or coastal pits.
• Odour trap: where the pit connects to a foul or combined drain.

Lift pits: a note

Lift pit drainage must follow the lift supplier's and the local authority's requirements, including how the drain connects and whether an oil separator is needed. Tell us the requirement, and we will supply to suit.

Maintenance

Pits collect sand, silt and debris. Lift the grate and clean the drain regularly, especially after heavy rain, so the pit empties when it needs to. Where grit is expected, see Gully & Sand Traps.
