Floor drains look like a small item on the BOQ, but the wrong choice causes slow drainage, odours and stained tiles. Whether you are fitting out a villa, a hotel or a commercial kitchen in Dubai, this guide covers what to check before you order.
1. Material and finish
- Stainless steel 304/316: clean, modern and corrosion-resistant. SS 316 is best for pools, coastal sites and commercial kitchens.
- Nickel bronze: a heavy, premium finish favoured in high-end residential and hospitality projects. It develops a warm tone and wears well.
See our guide on nickel bronze vs stainless steel drain tops and the floor drains page.
2. Shape and grate type
- Square and round floor drains: standard for bathrooms, balconies and service areas.
- Linear shower drains: long, slim channels for walk-in showers, with a single fall in the floor and large-format tiles.
- Tile-insert grates: the grate holds a piece of the floor tile, so the drain almost disappears.
3. Outlet size and position
Check the pipe size (for example 2″ or 3″) and whether the outlet is vertical or horizontal. Bathrooms usually need a vertical outlet; balconies or slabs with limited depth may need a side outlet.
4. Trap and odour control
A floor drain needs a water seal to stop sewer smells. In rooms where the drain rarely receives water, the seal can dry out in the UAE heat. Ask about deep-seal traps or anti-odour inserts for these areas.
5. Kitchens and heavy-use areas
Commercial kitchens need larger-capacity floor drains with removable baskets to catch food solids, and heavy-duty grates where trolleys run over them.
