When specifying floor drains and cleanouts, the visible top (the grate or strainer) is what people see and walk on every day. The two most common premium materials are nickel bronze and stainless steel. Both are excellent, but they suit different situations.
Nickel bronze
Nickel bronze is a copper-based alloy with a warm, silvery-gold tone. It is cast, so it can take thick, strong sections and detailed patterns.
- Very strong and well suited to heavier foot traffic and wheeled loads.
- Classic, warm appearance that suits traditional and luxury interiors.
- Commonly paired with cast iron bodies in mechanical rooms, car parks and commercial floors.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel tops are usually made from sheet or cast stainless steel, with a bright, modern look.
- Excellent corrosion resistance, especially in SS 316.
- Hygienic and easy to clean, which suits kitchens, food areas and healthcare.
- Clean, contemporary appearance that matches modern sanitaryware.
How to choose
- Luxury bathrooms and hotels: either, depending on the design palette. Stainless steel suits modern interiors and nickel bronze suits classic ones.
- Commercial kitchens and food areas: stainless steel.
- Plant rooms, basements and car parks: nickel bronze or stainless steel tops on cast iron bodies.
- Coastal or pool areas: SS 316.
