Frequently asked questions

Which roof drain should I use on a flat concrete roof?
A dome roof drain is the usual choice for open roofs, because the raised dome keeps water flowing even when debris builds up. Use a flat grate where the roof is used as a terrace.
What outlet sizes do you supply?
3" and 4" outlets are the most common; other sizes are available on request.
Do you supply rainwater outlet flaps?
Yes – stainless steel outlet flaps for downpipes and wall outlets.
Can you match an existing drain or a consultant specification?
Yes. Send the specification, a photo or the existing model and we will offer a matching product.
Do you deliver outside Dubai?
Yes, across the UAE, and to GCC projects on request.

How to choose a roof drain for a UAE project

The right roof drain depends on the roof build-up, whether people walk on the roof, and how the outlet connects to the drainage pipe below. These are the points we check with contractors and MEP consultants before we quote.

1. Roof type and waterproofing

Most roofs in Dubai and the UAE are concrete slabs with a bituminous, PVC, TPO or liquid-applied membrane. The drain needs a flange and clamping ring that grips the membrane, so water cannot track under the waterproofing at the outlet. On inverted roofs, green roofs and podiums with screed, tiles or pavers, choose a drain with an adjustable extension so the grate finishes level with the top surface.

2. Foot traffic and finish

  • Non-walkable roofs: a dome roof drain keeps sand, leaves and debris out of the outlet and still drains if debris builds up around it.
  • Terraces, podiums and roof gardens: a flat roof drain sits flush with the floor finish so people can walk over it safely.
  • Public and hotel terraces: choose a heel-safe or stainless steel grate for a finished look.

3. Outlet size, number of drains and overflows

Outlet size and the number of drains depend on roof area, design rainfall and pipe size, and are set by the MEP drainage design. Common outlet sizes are 3″ (75–80 mm) and 4″ (100–110 mm). Good practice is to give every roof area at least two outlets, or one outlet plus an overflow scupper, so a single blocked drain does not flood the roof. Choose a vertical outlet where there is ceiling space below, or a side (90°) outlet where the pipe must run horizontally.

4. Materials

MaterialBest for
Cast iron bodyStandard choice for concrete roofs – strong, durable, non-combustible and quiet in use
Aluminium domeLightweight, corrosion-resistant debris guard for non-walkable roofs
Stainless steel 304 / 316Coastal sites, architectural terraces and areas where a polished finish is wanted – 316 for sea-front projects

Approvals and submittals

We supply roof drains and rainwater outlets from established brands, including Zurn, which have been submitted and approved on projects in the UAE. For each enquiry we can provide technical data sheets, drawings, material submittals and manufacturer test information for consultant approval.

Installation and maintenance in UAE conditions

  • Set the drain body at the lowest point of the roof falls and fix it to the slab before waterproofing.
  • Bond or clamp the membrane into the drain flange – this joint is where most roof leaks start.
  • Keep domes and grates in place; sand and dust storms quickly block an open outlet.
  • Inspect and clean roof drains after sandstorms and before the winter rains, as many roof leaks in the UAE come from blocked outlets.

More roof drain questions

What is the difference between a roof drain and a scupper?
A roof drain sits in the roof slab and discharges into a vertical pipe. A scupper passes through the parapet wall and is often used as an overflow or where there is no space for internal pipes. See our scupper and parapet drains.

Can roof drains be used on balconies and planters?
Yes, but smaller balcony drains and planter drains with a mesh dome are usually a better fit – see planter and balcony drains.

What should I send for a quote?
The roof build-up (membrane type), outlet size, vertical or side outlet, dome or flat grate, quantity and project location. Email sales@alphatek.ae, call +971 54 466 7243 or use our request a quote form.
