Slot drains for a clean finish

Why choose a slot drain?

  • A clean, modern line: only a narrow slot shows, so paving and tiles run right up to the drain.
  • Safe underfoot: the narrow opening suits busy pedestrian areas.
  • Fast run-off: water enters along the full length of the slot.
  • Made to fit: custom lengths, corners and layouts.

Where slot drains work well

  • Building entrances and door thresholds, to stop water reaching the lobby
  • Terraces and balconies with level access
  • Pool decks, where a slim drain looks better than a wide grating
  • Showrooms and wet indoor areas

Installation notes

Set the channel to the finished level, keep the slot line straight and parallel to the building edge, and plan access points for cleaning. Connect the outlet to the drainage line as shown on the drawing.

How a slot drain is built

A slot drain has three parts:

  • The slot: the narrow opening you see at the surface. It sits flush with the paving or tiles.
  • The channel body: the stainless steel channel under the slot that carries the water.
  • Outlets and access boxes: where the water leaves the channel into the drain pipe, and where the channel is opened for cleaning.

Because only the slot shows, the floor finish can run right up to it from both sides. This is why architects specify slot drains for entrances, terraces and premium interiors.

Built-in fall or flat channel?

  • Channel with a built-in fall: the channel floor slopes towards the outlet, so water moves along it even on a flat surface. This suits long runs and areas with little or no surface fall.
  • Flat channel: the channel is level, and the surface around it falls towards the slot. It is simpler, and it suits short runs with outlets close together.

For long runs, plan more than one outlet. Shorter distances to each outlet mean faster drainage and easier cleaning.

Slot drains for hygienic areas

In commercial kitchens, food production and clean rooms, a slot drain in AISI 316 has smooth internal corners and no grating to lift. Choose access boxes that can be opened by hand for daily wash-down, and connect kitchen lines to a grease trap.

Slot drains at doors and thresholds

Level-access doors on balconies, terraces and lobbies need a drain that stops water before the door. Run the slot drain along the full width of the door opening, set it just outside the door frame, and fall the paving towards it. This also works for sliding doors on villa terraces.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • No access points. The channel cannot be cleaned without them. Plan one at each end and at every outlet.
  • Too few outlets on long runs. Water backs up in heavy rain.
  • Slot set above the paving. It must sit flush or slightly below, or water runs past it.
  • The wrong grade near pools or the sea. Use 316 for coastal areas, pools and areas washed with chemicals. See our SS 304 vs SS 316 guide.
  • Vehicles crossing a pedestrian slot drain. Tell us when vehicles cross, so the channel can be specified to suit.

What to put in your specification

The channel material (AISI 304 or 316), the finish, the slot width, the channel length and layout, the outlet positions and sizes, the number of access boxes, built-in fall or flat, and the area of use. We can send data sheets for consultant approval. See our drainage submittal checklist.

Slot drains for UAE rain

UAE storms are short and heavy. A lot of water arrives in a few minutes, often carrying sand that has collected for months. A slot drain copes with this when:

  • The slot runs the full width of the area that collects water, so water cannot run around the end.
  • Outlets are close enough together for the channel to empty quickly.
  • Access boxes are cleaned before the rainy season, so the sand from the summer does not block the first storm.

For terraces and podiums that drain to roof outlets, check that the roof drains can take the same flow.

Slot drains on terraces and podiums

On podiums and roof terraces, the slot drain sits above the waterproofing:

  1. The waterproofing membrane is laid and tested first.
  2. The slot drain is set on its supports, at the finished paving level.
  3. The outlet connects to the roof drain below, with the membrane sealed to the drain body.
  4. The paving is laid up to the slot from both sides.

Where the paving sits on a raised pedestal floor, the slot drain is supported at the same level as the paving. Keep a removable paver next to each access box.

Finishes

  • Satin or brushed: the most common finish. It suits most paving and hides small scratches.
  • Mirror polish: for premium interiors, hotel lobbies and showrooms.

Both are available in AISI 304 or 316. Outdoors and near the sea, choose 316.

Joining sections and long runs

Long slot drains are made in sections and joined on site. Keep the slot line straight and continuous across each joint, so the drain looks like one line. Plan joints at access boxes or outlets where possible.

Slot drains by project type

  • Hotels and resorts: lobbies, pool decks, spa areas and terrace restaurants, where the look matters.
  • Malls and retail: entrances and shopfronts, to stop water reaching the shop floor.
  • Residential towers: podium gardens, lobbies and balcony doors.
  • Villas: terrace doors, pool decks, driveways and garden paths.
  • Hospitals and food production: hygienic wet areas, in AISI 316.
  • Coastal projects: waterfront promenades and beach clubs, in AISI 316.

What affects the price?

  • The total length, and the number of corners, tees and access boxes
  • AISI 304 or 316

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose SS 304 or SS 316?
SS 316 for external, wet and coastal areas; SS 304 for indoor, dry areas.
Can you make custom lengths?
Yes. Slot drains can be made to your drawings or site sizes.
Do you deliver outside Dubai?
Yes, across the UAE and to GCC projects on request.
How are slot drains cleaned?
Through access points along the run, which let you flush or clear the channel.
Can slot drains take vehicle traffic?
For areas where vehicles cross, tell us the use and we will recommend a heavy-duty option.
Do you supply for pool decks?
Yes. Also see our pool drainage channels.
Can slot drains be used on a flat surface with no fall?
Yes, a channel with a built-in fall moves water to the outlet even when the surface is almost flat.
Are slot drains suitable for commercial kitchens?
Yes. AISI 316 slot drains with access boxes suit hygienic areas. Kitchen lines must also pass through a grease trap.
Can a slot drain turn corners?
Yes. Corners and tees can be made to your layout.
How often should a slot drain be flushed?
In busy entrances and pool decks, flush it every few months and before the rainy season. In kitchens, clean it daily.
Do slot drains work in heavy UAE rain?
Yes, if the outlets are close enough together and the access boxes are cleaned before the rainy season.
Can slot drains be used on a roof terrace?
Yes. The slot drain sits above the waterproofing at the paving level, and connects to the roof drain below.
