What is a rodding eye?
A rodding eye is a sealed access point at the end or bend of a drain pipe. When the line blocks, the cover is removed and drain rods or a jetting hose are pushed into the pipe to clear it. Then the cover is closed again, airtight.

Where rodding eyes are placed
- At the head (start) of every underground drain run
- At changes of direction where a manhole is not provided
- On long runs, so the whole line can be reached
- On kitchen and grease-carrying lines, where blockages are more likely
The exact positions are set by the drainage designer and the local authority's requirements.
Why stainless steel?
A stainless steel cover does not rust, stays easy to open after years outside, and looks neat in paving, landscaping and building walls. Use 316 for coastal areas and around pools.
Installation notes
- Set the rodding eye at the position shown on the drawing, aligned with the pipe.
- Set the cover flush with the finished surface.
- Check that the gasket seals and the screws turn freely.
- Keep the cover visible and accessible. Do not cover it with paving or planting.
